Today a tremendous program was organized at the world’s famous tourist place Gulmarg of North kashmir, the High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) Gulmarg, is a premier Institute of Indian Army since its inception in 1948. The school trains more than 1400 personnel of Indian Army, CRPF, BSF and friendly foreign Countries in Mountain and Winter Warfare annually. The training of troops at High Altitude Warfare school is considered as one of the toughest in the world under inclement weather conditions with subzero temperatures. The trainees at High Altitude Warfare School known as “The White Devils” gets trained for warfare in extreme harsh conditions, learn to survive the Glaciers without any life support. HAWS produces the finest Mountain Warriors and Ski Troopers who can undertake the most arduous and daunting operational tasks in mountain and snow bound area. The Ski Trooper epitomizes the perfect soldier. his Skills, endurance, courage, resolve and lethality are nonpareil. His ability to traverse harsh snow bound terrain with stealth and speed, to execute the most difficult operational tasks instills cold fear in the heart of the enemy. The courage and skill have been the difference between victory and defeat in many a battle fought by the Indian Army. They have scripted several victories, one piton at a time, and carved their names in golden letters.
Indian mountaineering history is glorified by the alumni of HAWS. Indian Mountaineering expeditions first ascents like Everest, Kanchenjunga , Nanda Devi, Sia Kangri etc are scaled by HAWS trainees.
In the world of Winter Games Athletes of Army Winter Games Node who are part of HAWS are the best in the country Sweeping all National events and representing country at International Events.
The contribution of HAWS in Search and Rescue operations in Mountains have been monumental, Over the years HAWS has been first choice for rescue missions in calamities in mountains. Such is the reputation of the Institute that old adage sums it all
“ IN THE MOUNTAINS, WHENEVER IN TROUBLE OR LOST, NEXT TO GOD, REMEMBER HAWS”
Commandant HAWS Maj Gen R K Singh , VSM dedicated the statue of “ The Ski Trooper” to all the White Devils who are unseen Heros of the Country. The Statue Stands tall in the Shadow of mighty Afarvat will be a tourist attraction for all the tourist visiting Gulmarg. The view point was designed and executed by Lt Col Sachin Shinde, in four months’ time.
